A landmark is a special building, property or object with historical or artistic value. The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) designates these landmarks.

They have special character, special historical value, special aesthetic interest of value as part of the development, heritage or cultural characteristics of New York City, New York State or the nation.

The LPC must approve any changes to a landmark. This includes:
