Truck Route Network
Vehicles with two axles and six tires, or three or more axles, must follow the New York City Truck Route Network. This network is a series of roads that trucks must use to travel to their destination. Trucks should only leave the network at the intersection closest to an off-route destination.
The network has two types of roads:
- Local Truck Routes: roadways used to access origins and destinations within an NYC borough
- Through Truck Routes: roadways used primarily for pass-through traffic across multiple boroughs and for when truck origins and destinations are outside of NYC
Commercial vehicles that are not trucks do not have to follow this network. However, they must follow all signs about the operation of commercial vehicles.
To help drivers, the Department of Transportation publishes the New York City Truck Route Map. The map also contains helpful information on truck route signage, weight limits and dimensions, overweight/over-dimensional permitting and truck related violations. It also includes City, regional and state truck-related resources.
